Cradle-to-grave life cycle comparison of internal combustion, battery electric and fuel cell vehicles under Nepal's hydro-dominated electricity mix.

The generation mix is what makes this a Nepal-specific question rather than a restatement of international results: an emissions comparison that assumes a coal-heavy grid does not describe a country supplied largely by hydropower. The study underpins ESTRL's electric transportation programme.

Review of charging infrastructure, battery sizing and driver behaviour strategies that reduce range anxiety among electric vehicle users.

Range anxiety is a deployment constraint as much as a technical one, and it is sharper in a country with long inter-district journeys and thin charging coverage. The review frames the drive-pattern measurement ESTRL now runs.

Beyond journal articles

Peer-reviewed articles are the record, but they are not the whole output. Applied energy research in Nepal has to land somewhere other than a journal to matter, so a substantial share of ESTRL's work reaches ministries, standards bodies and manufacturers first.

Policy and standards input

The laboratory's buildings work feeds energy efficiency provisions in Nepal's National Building Code, and the thermal comfort and indoor air quality study is explicit groundwork for national standards. A dedicated policy and guidelines review covers building code efficiency, indoor environment policy and electric vehicle policy.

Test protocols and benchmarking

Water Boiling Test benchmarking of cooking devices produces comparable efficiency figures for appliances entering the Nepali market — the kind of output a procurement decision or a subsidy design can actually use.

Prototypes and simulation models

Modular electric vehicle design for rural Nepal is carried through simulation and prototyping, and the modelling and simulation group maintains numerical models for grid integration, optimisation and control.

Theses and trained researchers

More than twenty graduate students have been mentored at ESTRL, most producing a thesis attached to a funded programme. Several have gone on to doctoral study abroad. See the team page for current members and alumni.
